Agenda
Tuesday, April 8, 2014
  • 19:00 – 21:00 | Welcome Reception & Networking at Steigenberger Hotel, Bad Homberg
Please join us for drinks, appetizers, and networking the night before the Workshop.
Morning Sessions - Tuesday, April 9, 2014
  • 08:00 – 08:30 | Registration and Networking Over Coffee
  • 08:30 – 08:45 | Welcome and Introduction
Gerard Litjens, Director of European Operations, CIMdata
Introduction to the Workshop and update on CIMdata and its direction, for 2014 and beyond.
  • 08:45 – 09:15 | CIMdata Knowledge Councils & Consulting Practices
Don Tolle, Director of Systems Engineering & Simulation Consulting Practices, CIMdata
Introduction to CIMdata’s knowledge councils and consulting activities related to systems engineering and simulation and analysis. The value of the councils in advancing the state-of-the-art in many areas related to PLM will be discussed. Results and lessons learned from CIMdata’s ongoing systems engineering and simulation and analysis consulting activities will be described.
  • 09:15 – 10:00 | From Documents to Models: The Vision for Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)
    Speaker to be announced.
Presents a vision of MBSE in support of systems engineering: The case for using shared digital models to capture requirements and knowledge to enable collaboration and concurrent engineering, rather than relying on requirements documents that do not communicate well between organizations and do not relate to design elements. Examples of why this is critical to establishing a systems concept in organizations’ product development processes are presented. How MBSE supports and enables systems engineering concepts throughout product development and facilitates detailed design concepts are described.
  • 10:00 – 10:30 | Networking Break
  • 10:30 – 11:15 | Model-Based Systems Engineering in Practice
    Speaker to be announced.
A presentation on the real-world application of MBSE through physics-based modeling to define, realize and validate systems in a manufacturing company. A description of the issues that arise in this approach and the state-of-the-art in applying MBSE techniques in a systems of systems perspective. How MBSE results are reconciled with higher-level systems requirements will be presented, as will pitfalls and lessons learned.
  • 11:15 – 12:00 | Systems Engineering Applied to Industrial Products
    Speaker to be announced.
An example of the state-of-the-art on systems engineering at a company that is building a range of products based on both simple as well as complex systems. Cross-discipline requirements definition and validation are described. Examples of how systems engineering and simulation & analysis practitioners communicate and interact across an organization’s internal boundaries and externally with design partners and suppliers are presented.
  • 12:00. – 13:15 | Networking Over Lunch
Afternoon Sessions – Wednesday, April 9, 2014
  • 13:15 – 14:00 | Requirements Definition
    Speaker to be announced.
A discussion of how a company defines, captures and manages requirements and changes to requirements, including tools and processes that are used to track and validate design performance and completeness compared to those requirements. Experiences with how requirements are decomposed into lower-level requirements will be shared. Techniques for linking requirements to product design elements will be presented.
  • 14:00 – 15:15 | Panel Discussion: Constructing a Systems Engineering Roadmap
Moderated by Keith Meintjes, Ph.D., Simulation & Analysis Practice Manager, CIMdata, and John MacKrell, Vice President, Systems Engineering Knowledge Council Lead, CIMdata
    Panelists to be announced.

Practical, interactive discussion for industrial end user companies. Leading solution providers gather in an open question and answer session and discussion with the attendees on the coming revolution for product development and the integration of systems engineering into PLM practices. Questions will be taken from the attendees as time allows.
  • 15:15 – 15:45 | Networking Break
  • 15:45 – 16:15 | Knowledge Council Research Findings and Plans
Keith Meintjes, Ph.D., Simulation & Analysis Practice Manager, CIMdata, and John MacKrell, Vice President, Systems Engineering Knowledge Council Lead, CIMdata
Report of results from current knowledge council research activities including survey results, maturity model results, reports, and other research. Plans for research to be undertaken in 2014 will also be presented.
  • 16:15 – 16:30 | Closing Comments
Gerard Litjens, Director of European Operations, CIMdata
Summary of main workshop takeaways and next steps.
